Saturday Survival Theater: Derelict
Since it’s spooky season I like to give you some scares but in this case this is also kind of preparation for next week. I’m working on a article about the myth of living in abandoned structures post-TEOTAWAKI that the prepper Internet loves. So here’s a 2017 indy thriller called Derelict which follows three friends exploring a deserted power station in the middle of nowhere, for some reason. Survival horror ensues.
For a low budget flick it’s surprisingly good and the actors and cinematography are good enough to make you ignore the two dimensional characters. Set in Australia which will explain to my American readers why three adult men are menaced by a slight person with a light crowbar. But having done a little “Urbex” in my youth (before it had a stupid name) I can attest to the film having both realistic environments both in lack of light and that most abandoned structures have people you may not want to be alone with in them.
The con here is that YouTube is the only video embed Substack works with and…YouTube loves their ads. The ad breaks are timed like 1990s television so if that bother you, sorry.
